What is the TikTok Benadryl challenge?

Participants take 12-14 pills at a time and then record their experiences on TikTok to share online. While diphenhydramine is considered safe and effective when used as recommended, higher doses can cause dangerous side effects such as heart problems, seizures, coma, and even death, according to the FDA and CBS News. The maximum allowed dose in a 24-hour period for children aged 6 to 12 is six tablets and 12 tablets for adults and children over 12.
An overdose of diphenhydramine can result in symptoms such as constipation, dry throat and mouth, dehydration, extreme drowsiness, nausea, tremors, blurry vision, rapid heart rate, seizures, and difficulty urinating. The sad news is that a 13-year-old boy from Ohio lost his life after overdosing on over-the-counter medication while participating in the ‘Benadryl Challenge’. According to a report from the New York Post, the teenager had ingested 12 to 14 pills of Benadryl, as part of the challenge, which urges participants to take excessive amounts of the drug in order to induce hallucinations.

The challenge encourages participants to consume dangerous amounts of the medication, which can lead to serious health risks like heart problems, seizures, and even death.
