Twitch has always introduced new features to the platform to help creators gain more popularity and traction. While the community appreciates most of these features, some features seem to rub fans the wrong way. Twitch’s Boost Stream feature was one such introduction. However, despite the backlash from the community, Twitch is set to release the feature and it has been going strong so far.
Naturally, since the feature will soon be up and running on the platform, fans are curious about how the feature works. Here is everything fans need to know about the Boost Stream feature on Twitch.
What is Twitch Boost Stream?
Twitch announced the Boost Stream feature back in September 2021. The feature essentially allows viewers to pay a certain amount of money to propel a streamer’s page to the Twitch homepage. This allows the streamer to gain more exposure, thereby increasing their reach. Twitch announced that this feature aimed to help small-time Twitch streamers gain more exposure on the platform.
The amount viewers can pay for the Boost Stream feature ranges from $0.99 to $500. So far, it is only available for creators and viewers based in the USA.
Why was this feature not well-received by the community?
In theory, Twitch’s Boost Stream feature allows small-time streamers to get the exposure they need with the help of their fans. However, the feature left a sour taste in the mouth of many in the Twitch community. This was because bigger streamers with larger fanbases could also get their streams boosted by their fans. Furthermore, the streamers themselves could boost their streams, thereby rendering the original motive useless. As a result of this, small-time Twitch streamers would find it more difficult than before to gain exposure on the platform.
Many prominent streamers like Pokimane, xQc and others spoke up about this issue on their channels. They stated that with this move, Twitch had essentially transformed itself into a pay-to-win forum. Streamers and their viewers’ ability to pay money to boost streams was what determined their exposure on the platform.
Despite the severe backlash, Twitch is still set to release the feature on the platform. Although there is no release date yet since the feature is still in development, fans can be assured that they will see the Boost Stream feature appear on the platform soon.
