Roger Federer and John Isner have faced each other on 10 occasions and the Swiss legend leads the head-to-head 8-2.
At the 2007 US Open, John Isner faced a rampaging Roger Federer who had won the Australian Open and Wimbledon and also reached the finals at the French Open that year, before being ousted by the “King of Clay”.
Federer and Isner clashed in the third round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 22-year-old Isner won a closely-fought first set but Federer showed his class in the next three, as he won the match 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
Don’t get deceived by the one-sided scoreline as the American played exceedingly well throughout the match. Just that he was facing a master at the peak of his powers. During the match, Federer won a whopping 105 points straight without an unforced error in the second and third sets to create a mind-boggling record.
How did Roger Federer fare at the 2007 US Open?
Federer went on to win his third Grand Slam title of the year, defeating Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2007 US Open.
This was Federer’s fourth consecutive US Open title and 12th major title overall. It was also Federer’s 6th title of the year and his 51st overall.
He ended the year as the World No. 1 and accumulated calendar prize money of $10,130,620. Federer won two more titles in the year and in 2011, Stephen Tignor, chief editorial writer for Tennis.com, ranked his performance in 2007 as the sixth greatest season of all-time during the Open Era.
