Ahead of his fight against former title contender Derrick Lewis, we look at Tai Tuivasa’s record
Tai Tuivasa made his UFC debut on 19th November 2017 and immediately grabbed everyone’s attention thanks to a flying knee KO that earned him a performance of the night bonus.
Popular for his famous ‘shoey‘ Tai Tuivasa embarked on a blitzing 9-0 run in MMA. The Australian UFC sensation had to face some dark times after that.
He went on to lose three fights and had his back against the wall. He realized a change had to be made, and he did. Tuivasa has been on a four-fight win streak since then and his popularity is on an all-time high.
As we enter into the fight week of UFC 271, he is in good spirits and full of confidence set to face the greatest heavyweight knockout artist – Derrick Lewis.
Tai Tuivasa claims he was drunk when he agreed to the Derreck Lewis fight
Australian heavyweight sensation Tai Tuivasa has an incredible opportunity in his hands coming Saturday. He will face heavyweight star Derrick Lewis in a battle of the hard hitters.
Riding on a four-fight win streak, he rides into this fight with all eyes on him. Interestingly he was super drunk when he agreed to this fight.
Speaking with ESPN he said:
“I was on the piss; I was blind [drunk],” Tuivasa revealed to ESPN. “I didn’t notice until the next morning that [UFC matchmaker] Mick Maynard messaged me and I had messaged back. He messaged, ‘Are you awake,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah’; it was like 4:30 in the morning.
“And then I woke up to 20 missed calls from my manager, from my coach Sully [Shaun Sullivan] and s— like that, so I was like, ‘Something must have happened. And then it come up, and why not? Why wouldn’t I?” Tuivasa continued. “It’s a great opportunity. Obviously, he’s No. 2 or No. 3 or whatever he is. He’s a fan favourite; I’m a fan favourite. I really respect Derrick, what he’s done and the person he is.”
