Who is Ron DeSantis?

Ronald Dion DeSantis is a former military officer and politician who has been serving as the 46th governor of Florida since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, DeSantis previously represented Florida’s 6th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018. He joined the United States Navy in 2004 and served as a legal advisor to SEAL Team in 2006. 

He was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and later appointed by the U.S. Department of Justice to serve as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Florida. DeSantis quit his active military duty in 2010.

DeSantis was first elected to Congress in 2012 and became a founding member of the Freedom Caucus. In 2018, DeSantis won the Republican nomination for governor and chose state representative Jeanette Nuñez as his running mate. He defeated the Democratic nominee, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, by a narrow margin.

As governor, DeSantis has opposed the implementation of COVID-19 measures such as face mask mandates, stay-at-home orders, and vaccination requirements. Florida’s age-adjusted death rate for COVID-19 remained close to the national average, despite the state experiencing above-average economic growth and the fastest population growth of any state in the country. 

In 2021, DeSantis signed a bill prohibiting businesses, schools, cruise ships, and government entities from requiring proof of vaccination. He also cut state government spending, leading to the largest budget surplus in Florida history, and oversaw the passage of the Parental Rights in Education Act. DeSantis was reelected with the largest margin of victory in the state in 40 years.

DeSantis Personal Life

Ronald Daniel DeSantis, known as Ron DeSantis, was born on September 14, 1978, in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the son of Karen DeSantis and Ronald DeSantis, who installed Nielsen TV rating boxes, and his only sibling, his younger sister Christina Marie DeSantis, was born in Orlando.

Growing up, DeSantis was a talented athlete and was a member of the Little League team from Dunedin National that made it to the 1991 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School and Dunedin High School, graduating in 1997.

DeSantis pursued higher education at Yale University, where he studied history, played baseball, and joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He graduated magna cum laude in 2001 and went on to teach history and coach at Darlington School in Georgia for a year. He then attended Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude in 2005 with a Juris Doctor degree.

They tied the knot on September 26, 2009, at Walt Disney World and have three children together. It has been revealed that the Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, tied the knot with his wife Casey DeSantis at the Walt Disney World Resort in 2009. Recently, the governor has been involved in a battle with the company, which he admits is “kind of ironic”. In an interview with SiriusXM Patriot radio, Mr DeSantis spoke about the face-offs he has had with some major institutions in Florida and reflected on his wedding at Disney World.

His wife, who was also present during the interview, mentioned that news of their wedding made headlines when it was revealed last November. According to her, her parents were enthusiastic about the idea of getting married at Disney World as they always looked forward to visiting the park while she was growing up in Ohio.
