Gayle King Early Life

Gayle King is a highly regarded figure in the media industry. She is known for her impressive career as a television personality, broadcast journalist, and author. She was born on December 28, 1954, to Peggy and Scott King in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Later her family relocated to Ankara, Turkey when she was six years old because of her father’s work requirements. She returned to the United States with her family in 1966.

She completed her college education at the University of Maryland, with a degree in psychology. Gayle King embarked on her career in media, working in various roles before becoming a prominent television personality.

In an interview with Barbara Walters in 2010, Oprah Winfrey said, She and Gayle King was very close friends for a very long time since 1976. Oprah also phrased Gayle as “She is the sister everybody would want, she is the friend everybody deserves, I don’t know a better person.

Gayle was in a married relationship with Bill Bumpus, who is served as an attorney and an assistant attorney general in Connecticut. The couple broke their relationship in 1993 after 11 years of married life and they have a daughter and a son.

Gayle King Career

King’s career started as a production assistant at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, where she met Oprah Winfrey, who was an anchor for the station at the time. She later worked as a reporter at WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C. King moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Later in 1981, she became a news anchor for WFSB in Hartford, Connecticut, and she went on to work there for 18 years..

Eventually, she was given the chance to join The Oprah Winfrey Show as a special correspondent. She served as the temporary co-host of the NBC daytime chat programme Cover to Cover in 1991, which was cancelled after 13 weeks. The Gayle King Show, a syndicated talk show that King was offered in 1997, was cancelled after one season owing to poor ratings. She started doing The Gayle King Show on XM Satellite Radio in September 2006.

In 2011, King started presenting a brand-new program on OWN, also titled The Gayle King Show. As a result of King joining CBS to co-anchor CBS This Morning with Charlie Rose and a number of third co-anchors, including for a while Norah O’Donnell, the program was cancelled on November 17, 2011. On-air chemistry between King and Rose was praised. They were close and stayed so even after Rose left CBS after accusations of sexual misconduct against him.

It is to be noted that before joining CBS News, King worked as a special correspondent for Good Morning America. On November 10, 2011, she secured a deal with CBS to co-anchor CBS This Morning, beginning on January 9, 2012.

In 2019, she was chosen as one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.  Later in January 2022, King extended her contract with CBS News to continue as co-anchor of CBS Mornings.

Why is she missing?

She was absent from the show on April 5, 2023, which surprised viewers. Normally, King hosts the show with her co-anchors Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson, but on this day, they were replaced by Natalie Morales and John Dickerson. She isn’t appearing on the show, but King hasn’t yet given a reason. As the editor-at-large of Oprah Daily, she has nevertheless maintained a social media presence and shared her top TV recommendations. In March 2023, King posted on Instagram about her travels to Jordan, including a “Dead Sea float and mud bath.” She also shared a video of her weekend getaway to Las Vegas to see Adele’s last residency show. When King is not on CBS Mornings, she often hosts other specials for the network or travels around the world.

Is Gayle King joining CNN?

Gayle King has been the talk of the town amid rumours of her signing a deal with CNN to host a primetime talk show with Charles Barkley. In an interview at the 2023 Adweek Convergent TV Summit in New York, she stated that she had no intention of leaving CBS. She also mentioned that she has two years left on her contract. She joked about not speaking English when asked about the possibility of leaving CBS.

If King does sign off on the rumoured deal, she will earn a whopping $12 million for just one hour of screen time per week. This will catapult her to the top of the broadcasting industry, making her one of the highest-paid broadcasters in the industry.
