Here’s everything you need to know about the parents and family of German Tennis star Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, was born on April 20, 1997, to Russian parents, Irina Zvereva and Alexander Mikhailovich Zverev.

He has an older brother, Mischa, who is also a professional tennis player. Notably, both of Alexander’s parents had successful tennis careers representing the Soviet Union. His father achieved a national top ranking among men’s players and reached a world ranking as high as No. 175. Meanwhile, his mother was the fourth highest-ranked women’s player in the Soviet Union.

The Soviet government imposed limitations on its players, preventing them from participating in international competitions, which in turn hindered the potential rise of Alexander’s parents in the global tennis rankings. However, a significant turning point occurred as the collapse of the Soviet Union neared.

In 1990, Irina ventured to Germany to compete in a tournament, with her husband serving as her coach. During their stay in Germany, they received job offers as tennis instructors. Although they initially turned down the offers, they eventually accepted a position at the Uhlenhorster Hockey Club in Hamburg the following year and decided to make Germany their new home.

During Alexander’s early years, his mother played a pivotal role as his main coach, dedicating herself to his tennis development, while his father focused on coaching his brother. Zverev has acknowledged his mother’s influence on his technique, particularly praising her for shaping his impressive backhand. He noted that his mother’s coaching style was more relaxed compared to his father’s, who employed a rigorous approach with physical training sessions, often resembling the structured, timed drills and set repetitions typical of the Soviet coaching methodology.

Alexander Mikhailovich Zverev, the father of Alexander Zverev, had his own notable tennis career as a professional player, representing the Soviet Union during the 1970s and 1980s. His tennis journey included an appearance in the 1979 Davis Cup as part of the Soviet Union Team.

He achieved significant milestones in international competitions, winning a bronze medal at the 1983 Summer Universiade and a gold medal at the 1984 Friendship Games. Although he participated in major tournaments such as the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the French Open, he faced challenges progressing beyond the first round in any of those events.

Alexander Zverev – Mother

Irina Zverev, the mother of Alexander Zverev, also had a professional tennis career, representing the Soviet Union during the 1980s and early 1990s. Her tennis aspirations were initially hindered by the restrictions imposed on Soviet tennis players, which limited their international opportunities. However, with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Irina seized the chance to compete in tournaments on the ITF circuit, particularly in Germany and Greece. During her career, she reached five singles finals on the ITF circuit, with three taking place in Germany and two in Greece. An intriguing aspect of her career was her last runner-up trophy, which she earned by competing against Apostoli Tsitsipas, who happens to be Stefanos Tsitsipas’ mother. It’s noteworthy that both Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have risen to prominence as top 10 players on the men’s tennis tour.
