Naming the favourites in every UEFA Euro 2020 groups

The 2020 edition of UEFA Euro is upon us as 24 teams are divided into 6 groups, which will commence on June 11th, 2021. The tournament features the biggest European teams and each group has enough firepower in it to make for a great TV viewing.

So without further ado, we name our two favourites to qualify from each UEFA Euro 2020 groups. It should be kept in mind that 2 teams from each group will qualify. However, 4 best-placed third teams will also make the last-16 stages.

UEFA Euros 2020 Group A

Group A sees one International behemoth in Italy, who have 1 UEFA Euro title to their name (1968) and runners-up honours (2000, 2012). The other three teams are evenly matched. Switzerland are ranked 13th, Wales are at 17th, while Turkey are 29th. (h/t FIFA Rankings)

Italy are obvious favourites to finish on top. Wales, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale seem like they could make it out of this group in 2nd place. Third place candidates in this group would be Turkey, with the likes of Hakan Calhanoglu and Caglar Soyuncu in their ranks.

UEFA Euros 2020 Group B

Group B. (UEFA.com)

Group B has Belgium, who are being touted by many as one of the favourites to win it. They have quality players like Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Thibaut Courtois, who would spur them on to finish Group B as winners.

The fight for second place could be between Denmark and Russia. The Russians showed great form in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and would hope to continue it here. Here, we go with Belgium and Russia. Third place candidates could then be Denmark.

UEFA Euros 2020 Group C

Netherlands should walk all across this group and easily finish as table toppers. The Dutch team made the final of the 2010 FIFA World Cup but failed to build on that glory. They won the UEFA Euro in 1988 and would look to double their tally of Euros trophies.

Austria are good enough finish 2nd, ahead of Ukraine, who are potential third-place candidates in the group. North Macedonia would find it too tough to come away with anything.

UEFA Euros 2020 Group D

Group D. (UEFA.com)

Group D is perhaps the most interesting group as international rivals England and Scotland are placed together. The Three Lions are one of the favourites of the tournament and are expected to win this group.

Finishing below England could be Croatia, who made the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Czech Republic, the tournament winners in 1976, can hope to finish with a strong points tally in third.

Group E has Spain, who have the title three times and are expected to win this group. This group has three evenly matched teams in Sweden, Slovakia, and Poland. But we go with the Poles to finish in 2nd due to the man in form, Robert Lewandowski.

Out of the other 2 teams, Sweden seem better placed to finish third because of a strong squad and would hope they qualify as one of the best third-placed teams in the groups.

This is undoubtedly the group of death, with Portugal, Germany, and France all previous winners of the competition. But one win for Hungary here and this group could open up wide.
