Chance the Rapper is an American rapper and songwriter, born on April 16, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois. He was born to his parents, Ken Williams-Bennett and Lisa Bennett. His father was a senator to Barack Obama and his mother was the Illinois Attorney General. He is not born in a silver spoon, he grew up in a middle-class family.
Chicago is the birthplace of Chancelor Bennett, popularly referred to as Chance The Rapper. His parents were interested in politics and the legal system. He listened to jazz and religious music while he was growing up, but it was Kanye West’s “The College Dropout” album that first piqued his interest in hip-hop. In the sixth grade, he began rapping, and in high school, he created a hip-hop duet. Early Chance concerts took place at YOUmedia Lyricist Loft. After receiving a ten-day suspension from school for cannabis use, he published his debut album, “10 Day.”
In 2016, Chance the Rapper was a notable figure in the music industry. He was featured on several tracks on Kanye West’s album The Life of Pablo, as well as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’s album This Unruly Mess I’ve Made. He also collaborated with Skrillex for a remix of Hundred Waters’ “Show Me Love.” On May 12, 2016, Chance’s third mixtape, Coloring Book, was released exclusively on Apple Music. The mixtape was streamed over 57.3 million times in its first week and debuted at number eight on the US Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first release to chart solely on streams.
In September 2016, he headlined the Magnificent Coloring Day Festival at Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field, with a line-up including Lil Wayne, Young Thug, Skrillex, Tyler, the Creator, and Lil Uzi Vert. Chance continued to make headlines with a surprise appearance by Kanye West and his decision to remain an independent artist. He also won three Grammys and was nominated for an Emmy.
Despite his father’s involvement in Democratic Party politics, Chance the Rapper describes himself as an independent voter, although he has a history of supporting Democrats. He is an activist and philanthropist in his hometown of Chicago and has been actively fighting against gun violence. In 2017, he donated $1 million to the Chicago Public Schools to help offset the lack of government funding. Chance has also been an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, drawing comparisons to former President Barack Obama. He endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election and led a “march” to numerous polling stations with thousands of Chicagoans.
Chance is a Grammy award-winning rapper, who has managed to keep his nearly 10-year relationship with Kirsten Corley relatively private despite his high-profile career. The couple first met at the age of 9, and after reuniting in 2013, began dating. They eventually tied the knot in March 2019 in Newport Beach, California, with their daughter Kensli serving as the flower girl.
His wife, Kirsten Corley, founded World of BOBY, a children’s clothing brand that promotes representation, inclusivity, and mental health awareness. She graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and briefly studied fashion merchandising at the Art Institute of Chicago. Chance has been supportive of her business, and their daughters have worn BOBY’s designs. The couple also spoke about raising their kids amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement in a Parents magazine interview. They emphasized teaching their daughters self-love and the importance of fighting against oppression.
He posted a series of photos from their wedding on Instagram and captioned the post, “The Bennetts.” Although the couple prefers to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, they occasionally share posts about each other on social media, such as the loving tribute Chance wrote for Kirsten on her 25th birthday.
Chance the Rapper announced on Instagram in 2015 that he and his then-girlfriend Corley had welcomed their first child, Kensli. They welcomed their second daughter, Marli, in 2019. Chance postponed his tour to spend time with his family after Marli’s birth, realizing that he needed to be present for his daughters and wife. In a later interview, he expressed gratitude for his family and marriage.
