Hayes was born and raised in Norwood, Riverdale in the Bronx to an Italian-American mother and Irish-Catholic father who were involved in community organizing and education. He attended Hunter College High School and Brown University, where he studied philosophy and met his future wife, Kate A. Shaw. Hayes worked at the Bronx Zoo before beginning his journalism career. He is childhood friends with comedian Desus Nice and attended Brown with MSNBC co-host Alex Wagner and Lin-Manuel Miranda, whom he directed in his first musical.
He began his career in journalism in 2001 as a writer for the Chicago Reader, covering local and national politics.
