He comes from a Catholic family and is the son of Elvira Soledad Trasviña and Mario Alberto López Pérez, both of whom emigrated from Mexico. His father was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, while his mother was born in Tijuana, Territorio Norte de Baja California. Mario has a younger sister named Marissa, who is married to retired NFL linebacker Kailee Wong, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings and Houston Texans.

He also participated in tumbling, karate, and wrestling at the Boys and Girls Club when he was seven years old, excelling in all these activities and others his mother enrolled him in. During his time at Chula Vista High School, he was part of the school’s wrestling team in the 160 lb (73 kg) weight class. In his senior year, he placed 2nd in the San Diego Section competition and 7th in California. Mario graduated in 1991.
