Who is Borna Barisic? All you need to know about Rangers’ new £2.2million signing

According to BBC, Scottish club Rangers have signed Croatian defender Borna Barisic on a four-year deal for a fee of around £2.2m. The left-back impressed Rangers‘ manager Steven Gerrard in their Europa League qualifier game against NK Osijek (h/t BBC).

BBC further states that the 25-year-old is confident of getting back into the national team, provided he performs well in Scotland. Barisic will join his country-mate Nikola Katic in the back-line for Gerrard’s men, as the Gers must challenge Celtic for the domestic title this season.

Barisic is a fantastic player with various attributes to perform at the top level and be a regular at Rangers. Here’s everything you need to know about the player and why he can be a fabulous inclusion for the Gers:

Player Report – Borna Barisic

Age – 25

Main Position – Defender (Left-Back)

Barisic is a pacy left-back who can make those forays up the pitch and also track back to help the defence out. The 25-year-old has good speed with the ball to go past defenders in a flash. He can accelerate when needed to deceive an opponent, who thinks he has marked him right.

The Croatian’s passing skills aren’t too bad either, epitomizing his quality to pick out crucial passes and make use of the ball diligently. He is a good tracker of runs as well and can tackle to break up the opposition attacks.

So overall, Barisic’s game awareness on the pitch is high, which might be one of the reasons that influenced Gerrard positively while watching him during the Europa League qualifier.

The only thing where the Croat lacks is physicality, which is something he needs to work on when playing in the top tier of Scottish football. However, he has several other traits which are enough to make him a hit at Rangers.

Verdict

We all know the footballing mind of Steven Gerrard as a player, which thrived on quality. Now, after becoming the manager, he seems like a proficient talent-searcher as well. Barisic possesses the talent to be a top-class signing for Rangers and fulfil the faith shown by the Liverpool legend.
