Dexter Lumis has been hugely impressive since making his WWE NXT re-debut earlier this month
Having been off-screen for almost a year, Dexter Lumis suddenly finds himself inserted into a main event level feud on WWE NXT.
The mysterious wrestler was even name-checked by WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels as one of the brightest future stars in this week’s episode of WWE Backstage on Fox.
Formerly Samuel Shaw of Impact Wrestling, Lumis signed with WWE in February last year. Having made his house show debut in March, Lumis made his WWE NXT debut later in July, as part of the NXT Breakout Tournament. He would lose to Bronson Reed on his debut, before going AWOL.
Reintroduced earlier this month, Lumis has come back with a re-done character, that has an air of mystery surrounding him.
Standing at 6ft 2in, weighing 239 lbs, Lumis made his official re-debut on NXT against Jake Atlas on April 1 edition of WWE NXT. The enigmatic wrestler impressed heavily, making light work of his opponent to bag a quick win.
While he was not seen on the post WrestleMania 36 edition of NXT, Lumis was back on screen for the 15th April edition, where he once again destroyed his opponent Tehuti Miles, disposing of him with the Anaconda Vice.
Last week’s episode provided the biggest indication that WWE had huge plans for Lumis as he found himself inserted into the main event feud.
Coming to the rescue of Velveteen Dream in a tag team battle against Adam Cole and Robert Strong, after Keith Lee had been taken out, Lumis helped Dream clinch a win over the heels.
Lumis continued his winning streak this past Wednesday, even though he was pushed by Shane Thorne.
As mentioned previously, Lumis has an air of mystery about him, almost bordering on eeriness. He has proved to be a great worker in the ring with a solid offence.
Lumis has also impressed with his character work, bringing an unsettling presence to the screen.
He was known for playing a weird Patrick Bateman-esque character during his time with Impact Wrestling. And he seems to be drawing on that influence in his repackaged character on NXT.
Lumis’ theme song is a reference to hit Netflix TV series Stranger Things, further hinting towards a psychotic character.
It is still early days for Lumis post his re-debut. But the fact that he has been pushed into main event angles and is being hailed as the future by Shawn Michaels himself means he is set for bigger and better things.
Will he be the next Monster Heel on NXT? Will he be soon inserted into a title feud? Or will his mysterious gimmick fizzle out? Only time will tell.
