After six years of dedicated weight training, he turned professional by winning the 1997 Caribbean Championships.

In 2002, Gustavo made his first appearance at the prestigious Mr. Olympia competition, ranking 24th. He competed in his first Arnold Classic in 2004 and achieved a commendable 7th place. However, his most notable victory came in 2005 when he emerged victorious at the Mr. Olympia, defeating two of the greatest bodybuilders of all time.

Despite the demanding nature of his career, Gustavo prioritized his family. He was a loving father to his four children, sharing his bodybuilding journey and successes with them.
