Birkin’s romantic life took an interesting turn when she entered into a relationship with French singer and director Serge Gainsbourg. Although they were together for 12 years, they never married. In 1971, Birkin and Gainsbourg welcomed a daughter named Charlotte Gainsbourg, who has since become an accomplished actress and singer in her own right. The couple split up in 1980 due to Gainsbourg’s issues with violence and alcoholism.
Following her separation from Gainsbourg, Birkin began dating director Jacques Doillon. It was during this time that she became the inspiration behind the iconic Birkin bag, created by the prestigious French luxury brand Hermès. Together, Birkin and Doillon had a daughter named Lou Doillon, who has also followed in her mother’s footsteps as an actress, singer, and model.
Birkin’s acting career took off with minor roles in films such as Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup and Kaleidoscope However, it was her collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg in the film Slogan that marked the beginning of a significant working and personal relationship.
