Johnny Roten passed away on November 19, 2025 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, North Carolina after a brief illness. The Front Row Motorsports Performance Director was 60 years old and had spent over three decades building his legacy in NASCAR‘s garage.
Johnny Roten’s Early Career With NASCAR Legends
Born November 9, 1965 in Wilkes County to John Luke Roten and Ruth Elliott Roten, Johnny started his racing career with Junior Johnson as a brake specialist. He moved on to work with Bill Elliott for many years, helping the team secure wins and Pit Crew Championships while serving as a crew member on the 94 team.

In late 2008, Roten and his family relocated to Colorado where he made history with a small team that nobody expected to compete with the big organizations. His career spanned 30 plus years building, leading, and inspiring race teams across multiple racing series.
Johnny Roten: Finding His Forever Home at Front Row
Roten joined Front Row Motorsports in 2022 as Performance Director and remained with the team for three years until his death. Front Row described him as an integral part of their organization, noting his presence and personality would be deeply missed.
During his tenure at FRM, the team experienced significant growth and success. The organization expanded from two to three charters in the Cup Series and from one to two trucks in the Truck Series. Under his watch, Front Row celebrated the Indianapolis Cup Winner, seven Cup Series poles, 14 Truck Series wins, and seven Truck Series poles.
Michael McDowell, who spent seven seasons at Front Row before moving to Spire Motorsports in 2025, shared his tribute on social media: “Johnny was a great man that worked his tail off for us to have success. He would do whatever it took to get it done. Very sad for all of his Family, Friends and teammate’s. He will be missed.”

Roten was a member of Cricket Baptist Church in Millers Creek and lived in Granite Falls. He was preceded in death by his father John Luke Roten and his beloved Chows, Sam and Jaxon.
Those who knew Johnny described him as someone who never met a stranger and always checked on people to make sure they were okay. His obituary noted he would probably be upset with all the attention following his death because it was never about him. His work ethic, kindness, and the deep respect he earned throughout the racing community defined his character.
Roten mentored younger crew members and engineers throughout his career, taking time to explain things and help people learn rather than just giving orders. In a sport where pressure never stops and tiny mistakes can ruin races, having someone calm and experienced made all the difference. Many in the NASCAR garage had stories about Johnny’s jokes, how he handled tough situations, or how he checked in on people when they were struggling.
His presence will forever live with his boys at Front Row Motorsports, who he loved deeply. As his obituary stated, Johnny will ride shotgun with them in the many race seasons to come. A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at Miller Funeral Chapel.
