History was created on Sunday night but who won the 2022 Australian Open final?
Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev put on quite a show in the final of the 2022 Australian Open. However, it was Nadal who got the win in the end after an epic performance.
The Spaniard came into this clash as the underdog, even though he had 20 Grand Slams to his name.
Nadal had won only once in the final of the Australian Open, that too came almost 13 years ago. Medvedev had the chance to become the world no.1 with a win.
The Russian also came into this clash with a lot of form under him. Medvedev also won the last Grand Slam, the US Open and was keen on winning another title.
However, things didn’t go as planned for the Russian in the end.
Nadal actually started the match on the back foot. It was Medvedev who won the first set 6-2 and then took a 2-0 lead when it came to sets won.
The Russian also won the second set 7-6 and things were looking bad for Nadal. However, the Spaniard put up a rousing comeback where he won the third set 6-4. The next set also went Nadal’s way 6-4 and the final set was a cracker.
Nadal seemed set to win the title after going up 5-4 but Medvedev dug deep to stay in the match. The Russian was able to make it 5-5 and had his chances to go 6-5 up.
However, Nadal was able to get something from deep inside and got the fifth set 7-5. Emotions were on display on the court as there were doubts about the Spaniard’s participation in the tournament a few months back.
Those were all put to bed. Nadal won the 2022 Australian Open and he created history. This was the Spaniard’s 21st Grand Slam, one more than rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.
