Why Man United should loan out Tahith Chong amid interest

According to the Daily Mail, Man United winger Tahith Chong has emerged as a loan target for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in the summer transfer window.

As per the report, the German club’s interest in signing the youngster on loan has been confirmed by sporting director Frank Baumann.

Chong remains a part of United’s Europa League squad and featured as a substitute in the Red Devils’ most-recent 2-1 win over LASK Linz in the second leg of the round-of-16 tie. But the winger is frustrated at his lack of game in the Premier League. (h/t Daily Mail)

Plus, United feel that it would be worthwhile to allow him to go out on loan in order to play more competitive football on a regular basis, the report suggests.

Born in the Netherlands, Tahith Chong spent seven years in the youth ranks at Feyenoord before joining Man United’s academy back in 2016. Having impressed for the U-18s and U-23s, Chong eventually made his senior professional debut for United in a 2-0 FA Cup win over Reading back in 2019.

The Dutch U-21 international featured thrice in the 2019-20 Premier League and also made a handful of appearances in the domestic cup competitions for the Red Devils this past season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer prepared to put his trust in the club’s academy prospects.

Chong has also made 6 appearances in the delayed 2019-20 Europa League so far but has struggled to make a big impact despite showing flashes of his potential.

A fair deal for all parties?

Chong put pen to paper on fresh terms at Old Trafford until 2022 with the option of a further year. However, he has continued to struggle for regular game time at the highest level while failing to make the most of the limited opportunities afforded to him by the manager.

Things are unlikely to get any better for Chong after the impressive emergence of fellow academy graduate Mason Greenwood, who bagged 10 goals in the Premier League this season. The 18-year-old was well complemented by the likes of Martial and Rashford, with both players plundering 17 league goals en route the club’s third-place finish.

Let us not forget Daniel James, who showcased his versatility to play on either flank. He chipped in with some valuable goal contributions in his debut season at Old Trafford, meaning Chong is likely to find regular playtime very hard to come by in the foreseeable future.

And if United manage to pull off an audacious raid on Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho (h/t Daily Mail), who has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Red Devils, Chong’s future at the club could be well and truly over.

Verdict

Regardless of Sancho’s arrival, Chong would still find himself behind the likes of Rashford, James, Martial and Greenwood in the pecking order. So a loan move elsewhere would definitely be in the best interests of his development.

Also, it hardly makes any sense for United to keep the 20-year-old on their books and pay him wages for doing next to nothing. The Bundesliga has turned into a breeding ground for some top-quality young talent and the Red Devils need to hope that Chong gets regular minutes to work on his development in Germany.
