Why a new contract for Japhet Tanganga is a good move by Tottenham

According to Evening Standard, Tottenham are planning to hand Japhet Tanganga a new £15,000-a-week contract after impressing for the club.

The report suggests that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is a huge admirer of Tanganga and the way he has settled to life in the senior squad. His current contract with the club expires in the summer of 2021.

Tanganga, 20, came through the club’s youth ranks and made his debut for the first-team against Colchester United in the EFL Cup back in September. He was promoted to the senior side only at the beginning of this year.

He was handed his Premier League debut in the 1-0 loss against Liverpool last month. Despite the loss, he was at his best. So far, he has made 7 senior appearances for the Lilywhites.

And the report suggests that negotiations over his new contract are ongoing but Spurs are hopeful to complete the talks and tie him down to the club this week.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s men have progressed in the FA Cup after defeating Southampton 3-2 in the fourth-round replay. However, the Lilywhites have been inconsistent throughout the season and one of the chief reasons behind their poor performances is their leaky backline. The defensive unit has faced several limitations and the manager has had to do without some of the key players.

Welshman Ben Davies injured his ankle and has been on the sidelines for a long time and centre-back Jan Vertonghen has fallen down the pecking order. At the same time, Argentine youngster Juan Foyth, who looked brighter before his injury, has also failed to convince for a starting place.

And Englishman Danny Rose has also been sent on loan to Newcastle United. This has left the manager with only two established defenders in Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez. And without depth in their squad, it has been difficult for the team to play consistently.

Therefore, Japhet Tanganga’s new contract extension would be a smart move for the future.

The 20-year-old has been impressive in the limited time spent on the pitch. After a courageous display against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, he was at his best against Manchester City, whom Tottenham defeated last weekend.

Tanganga’s impressive form for the reserve side also earned him a call up to England’s U20 squad last summer. Since his debut, he has featured 7 times for the team.

Tottenham have a gem of a starlet in Tanganga and with both Vertonghen and Alderweireld in their 30s, it is great that the club are offering the youngster a new contract.
