Why a new deal for David McGoldrick is the right step by Sheffield United
According to Sky Sports, Sheffield United have handed a new deal to striker David McGoldrick that would keep him at Bramall Lane until 2022.
McGoldrick, 32, is a product of Notts County’s youth system. After spending most of his career on loan spells in the lower divisions, he moved to Ipswich Town in the summer of 2013. In over 150 appearances for The Blues, he scored 45 goals and provided 25 assists.
In the summer of 2018, he joined the Blades and helped them get promoted to the Premier League, scoring 15 goals in 44 Championship games. He was one of the key players for Sheffield United in their promotion to the top-flight. He has now agreed to a new two-year deal with the club.
Though he has struggled for goals this term, the Irishman has integrated into a key player under Chris Wilder. He has helped them to 7th position in the league table as the Blades are hoping to qualify for the Europa League when the games resume on June 17.
McGoldrick’s experience could be vital to Sheffield United
Wilder has done a stellar job since their promotion to the top-flight. The Blades have been one of the surprise packages in the league so far. They have been brilliant in every department and their defence has been firm, conceding just 25 goals in 29 games. This is the second-best in the league this term.
Apart from that, the forwards have also done a decent job. McGoldrick has been a key player up front, although he is yet to open his account in the league.
The Irishman has made over 440 appearances in English football, scoring 111 goals in the process and that shows he is capable of doing the job up front. His experience would be helpful for Wilder.
His experience and the impressive overall record could be an eye-opener for the youngsters coming through the ranks at Bramall Lane. Thus, by extending his contract, Sheffield United have made the right decision.

Verdict
Lys Mousset, Billy sharp and Oli McBurnie are the three main strikers in their ranks. And with McGoldrick’s presence set to be available for the next two years, the Blades have done well to have enough depth up front. Thus, the Irishman’s new deal has come at the right time and it is a good move by the club to keep him for a few more years.
