Steve Bergwijn

PSV Eindhoven winger Steven Bergwijn has been attracting a lot of attention from Arsenal and Tottenham over the last few weeks. The winger broke into the Dutch giants’ first-team two years ago and has gone on to become one of the most talented youngsters across Europe.

The pacey winger can operate on both wings and, interestingly enough, he was rejected by Ajax as a kid. PSV immediately snapped him up and the move paid off as he helped them win the Eredivisie title last term. Bergwijn has represented his county at several youth levels and is contracted with PSV until 2021.

The Dutch club had turned down an offer from Serie A side Torino last summer and they are expected to settle for no less than £20million for his services.

New Arsenal boss Unai Emery is keen to add a winger to his ranks this summer. Under the guidance and stewardship of the former PSG manager, the Dutch winger can take his career to the next level. Emery works well with youngsters and the winger could go straight into the first-team to fill the void left behind by Theo Walcott.

He amassed 8 goals and 7 assists across 27 appearances in the Eredivisie last term. He also averaged 2.3 shots and 2.3 dribbles per game. His ability to hold the ball under pressure and release it quickly will surely prove to be effective at Arsenal.

Tottenham are also long-term suitors of Bergwijn. It is important for Mauricio Pochettino to boost his attacking depth and the PSV sensation could go a long way in doing so.

However, it must be noted that the player lacks experience. And given the circumstances, it would be tough for the winger to compete with the likes of Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela for a place in the squad.

Hence, the young Dutchman should favour joining the Gunners since they can offer more playing minutes. Bergwijn also seems more suited to the Arsenal way of football, thus making a strong case for Emery to snap up him up ahead of arch-rivals Tottenham this summer.
