Opinion: This 22-year-old Real Madrid starlet may not be the man to ease Arsenal’s defensive woes

Why Arsenal should keep their eyes off Eder Militao

As per Spanish outlet Dob Balon (h/t The Sun), Arsenal have targeted Real Madrid defender Eder Militao to bolster their defensive unit ahead of the summer transfer window.

Militao, 22, came through the ranks of Sao Paolo’s youth system and moved to FC Porto in the summer of 2018. His impressive performances with the Portuguese giants earned a move to Real Madrid the following summer.

However, since his arrival at the Spanish capital, Militao has failed to convince the manager and has made fewer starts so far. He hasn’t contributed enough and doesn’t seem to be at his best after mostly sticking to the bench for the majority of the campaign. Thus, Arsenal should keep their eyes off Militao.

The Gunners have regrouped themselves in the latter stages of the season after the arrival of Mikel Arteta. They haven’t lost any of their league game since the turn of the New Year and are currently placed 9th in the league standings.

Their attacking unit, led by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has been brilliant so far. The Gabonese international has scored 17 goals out of the 40 scored by the team. However, the same cannot be said of their defensive unit, which has lacked stability at the back.

Arsenal defence needs reinforcements but Militao might not be a good choice

David Luiz was brought in as a replacement for Laurent Koscielny but the Brazilian has been error-prone on a lot of occasions. Sokratis has not been at his best either and German centre-back Shkodran Mustafi has been inconsistent as always.

Apart from that, they have only William Saliba, who is set to join only at the end of the campaign after his loan spell ends with Saint Etienne. Pablo Mari is only on loan from Flamengo, thus, it is clear that the Gunners need reinforcements at the back.

In that regard, signing Real Madrid’s Militao would not be a wise decision by the club as the Brazilian has failed to develop his game in Spain.

After playing a big role last year with Porto, Militao has not established himself at Real Madrid. He has made just 9 league appearances so far and he looks to be nowhere near his best. He has also failed to provide competition to Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane.

Verdict

Arsenal are in dire need of centre-backs but Militao may not be the answer to their defence. He is inexperienced and has not featured regularly this term. Thus, Arsenal should avoid signing the former Porto man and instead look elsewhere to strengthen their backline this summer.
