According to Todofichahes (h/t Daily Star), Arsenal could pip Manchester United to the signing of £35m-rated Pau Torres from Villarreal. Despite the Red Devils’ interest in the defender, Arsenal could well be poised to prise him away from under their noses. Much like they did with Gabriel Magalhaes in the summer.
The 23-year-old rose through the ranks of Villarreal’s youth system and was promoted to the club’s senior setup in the summer of 2018. After struggling to find regular game time, he was sent on loan to Malaga, where he developed himself.
Since his return to La Ceramica, Torres has established himself as the first-choice centre-back under Javier Calleja. He is one of the most promising young talents in Spain and his impressive performances have also garnered attention from elite teams. The youngster has made close to 50 appearances for Villarreal, scoring and assisting two goals each (source – Transfermarkt).
Torres also earned a call-up to the national team last October and scored within a few minutes of his debut against Malta. So far, he has made 5 appearances for the national side.
Arsenal do have a glut of central defenders on their roster. They added Gabriel to their ranks and William Saliba returned from his loan spell.
However, the likes of Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis are all out of favour. Also, with David Luiz on the wrong side of 30, it makes sense for the club to go for a promising young defender. In Saliba, Gabriel and Torres, they could have three fantastic young centre-backs for the long run.
Arsenal would be smart to complete a deal for Pau Torres as soon as possible. As mentioned earlier, Manchester United are also after the player (source – Daily Star). The Gunners should try to get him before their rivals. Torres would be a fantastic addition to their improving backline.
Torres represents a good investment for the future that could produce rich dividends. Despite the young age, he is fairly experienced and that could benefit Arsenal.
