Why Arsenal should sign Jerome Boateng to bring stability to their defence
According to Foot Mercato (h/t Evening Standard), Arsenal are interested in signing German ace Jerome Boateng in the summer.
Boateng, 31, has established himself as one of the best defenders in football with Bayern Munich after failing to impress at Manchester City. He is one of the key players in the Bavarians’ backline and also helped Germany win the World Cup in 2014.
However, this season, he has seen limited game time under Hansi Flick and could be on the move in the summer, as per the report. Arsenal should look to sign him to bolster their defensive unit.
Meanwhile, the Gunners have regrouped since the arrival of Mikel Arteta and have turned their fortunes for good. They haven’t lost a game in the league since the turn of the New Year and are hoping for qualification to the Europa League.
Despite having their results bettered, Arsenal have been inconsistent since the start of the campaign. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the only player who is at his best and has been the best in front of goal. The attacking unit, led by the Gabon international, has come lively in the second half of the campaign.
But the same cannot be said of the defensive unit. David Luiz was bought last summer to fill the void left by Laurent Koscielny but the Brazilian has been error-prone. His errors have cost Arsenal a lot, especially in the game against Chelsea, where he received his marching orders.
Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis have also failed to live up to the expectations with their inconsistency at the back. Rob Holding has been out of action due to injury and Calum Chambers, who looked to get going, has also suffered a season-ending injury.
However, Arteta brought in Spaniard Pablo Mari on loan in January but he would return to Brazil once his contract runs down at the end of the season. Therefore, the manager should look to strengthen the backline by bringing in reinforcements and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng would be a sensible option for the club.
Boateng would undoubtedly bring in a wealth of experience, whilst adding the much-needed depth to the Gunners squad. He has made 500 career appearances and his experience would be a huge boost to Arteta’s backline.
The former Manchester City man has evolved into one of the finest centre-backs in football, helping Bayern Munich lift several trophies in the past. He could be a crucial player in North London if he keeps himself away from injuries.

Verdict
At 31, he still has a few more years left at a higher level and his qualities could surely bring stability to Arsenal’s defence if he is able to replicate the good form he has shown in the past. Hence, the Gunners should take him on board in the summer.
