Why Arsenal must make an attempt to land Dominik Szoboszlai
According to French journalist Manu Lonjon (h/t Daily Express), Arsenal are considering an approach for Red Bull Salzburg star Dominik Szoboszlai.
The 19-year-old midfielder has caught the eye of several European heavyweights including Arsenal after impressing for Salzburg following his move from feeder club Liefering in January 2018. Szoboszlai has already made 58 appearances for the Austrian champions and has racked up an eye-catching 15 goals and 22 assists in his short time at the club.
The teenage talent is currently his side’s top assist-provider in the league with 12 assists and has also scored 7 goals from his 24 league appearances so far. Despite being so young, Szoboszlai has shown great maturity and potential that has seen him emerge as one of the key players in Jesse Marsch’s Salzburg side.
His ever-improving club performances also opened the doors to his national team, and Szoboszlai is now a regular in the Hungary national team. The teenage midfielder has so far featured 8 times for Hungary since making his debut in March 2019.
Szoboszlai can offer Arsenal creativity in the midfield
The lack of a creative midfielder has hurt Arsenal badly this season, with the side managing just 43 goals from their 31 league matches. If not for their skipper and talismanic striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the club would have suffered even more.
The Gabonese striker has done the majority of the scoring for the Gunners this season and is currently his side’s top-scorer in the league with a whopping 17 league goals to his name.
The poor form of veteran playmaker Mesut Ozil in recent times has turned out to be a huge concern for Arteta’s side, with the German managing just one goal and two assists from his 18 Premier League appearances so far. Apart from the 31-year-old, Arsenal lack an attacking midfielder in their ranks and this could hurt the side badly next season.
That said, Arsenal’s motive to make an approach for the in-form Szoboszlai makes complete sense. Having proved himself already at Salzburg, he could provide the Gunners with the much-needed creativity in the middle that they lack at the moment.

Verdict
Arsenal’s lack of a creative midfielder has been very evident this term and it is clear that they need a new face in their ranks. Hence, a move for the talented Szoboszlai is, by all means, a welcome sign for the club. Moreover, he is only 19 now and can develop under Arteta’s guidance. Considering his young age, he could also prove to be an excellent future signing for the club.
