Sky Sports has confirmed that Tyrone Mings has signed a new contract with Aston Villa which will keep him at the club for another 4 years. This comes on the back of captain Jack Grealish extending his contract earlier this month. (h/t avfc.co.uk)
Tyrone Mings is a 27-year-old English defender who plays for Aston Villa. He started his youth career at Southampton’s academy in 2001 and moved to Bristol Rovers in 2009.
A couple of spells at Yate Town and Ipswich followed and it was only in 2013 that Mings became an established member of the squad. He played a total of 63 games for Ipswich, predominantly featuring for them in the 2014-15 season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Mings was signed by AFC Bournemouth in 2015. However, he featured for them on a very sporadic basis in the 3 and half seasons he was there. He managed a meagre 23 appearances for the side. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Aston Villa acquired him midway through the 2018-19 season when they were in the midst of a promotion push. They did manage to secure promotion and Mings was a vital part of last season’s survival campaign as well. He has played 57 games for them so far, scored 4 goals and provided 3 assists. Mings has just the 2 international caps for England, having made his debut in October 2019.
The tall centre-back has become a vital part of Dean Smith’s side that managed to hold on to their Premier League status last season after securing promotion in the season prior.
Mings was a fixed name in Villa’s team sheet with the likes of Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Bjorn Engels vying for the other center-back spot. His versatility means he has featured for Villa at other positions such as left-back when required, making him an even more valuable to the team.
The England international has been a rock at the back despite Villa’s defensive struggles. Thus, extending his contract will only serve them well.
A new contract makes perfect sense when you look at how much he has contributed to Villa’s cause over the last season and half. He has been a leader at the back, trying to keep the back line organized and in shape.
Now with two of their prominent players being tied down to new and long-term contracts, Villa can rest assured that they will be committed to the club. They will need Mings at his best again if they are to avoid a relegation scare like last season.
