Why Aston Villa signing Victor Nelsson would be a useful move

According to The Sun, Aston Villa have made an offer of £9m for FC Copenhagen defender Victor Nelsson. The club are on a spending spree after bringing in the likes of Emiliano Martinez, Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins and Bertrand Traore. However, it does not look like they are about to stop at those names and few more new arrival could be on the way.

Profile

Victor Nelsson is a 21-year-old Danish centre-back who plays for FC Copenhagen. He started his youth career at Hornbaek IF before moving to FC Nordsjaelland in 2010. There, he spent the next six years in the youth teams.

In 2016, he was promoted to the senior team. He went on to play 98 games for the side and scored 2 goals and assisted one. Last season, he moved to FC Copenhagen and has already managed to pick up 58 appearances to his name (source – Transfermarkt).

Nelsson is a part of the Denmark U-21 side and has played 27 times for them. He is yet to be called up to the senior team though.

Do Aston Villa need him?

Aston Villa recently extended the contract of Tyrone Mings (source – Sky Sports) and it seems it would be a good idea to pair him up with another good defender. While Ezri Konsa, Kortney Hause and Bjorn Engels are there as the other centre-backs for Villa, they haven’t fared any good alongside Mings.

Victor Nelsson is a promising young defender but he also comes with a fair bit of experience. He featured in over 50 games for Copenhagen last season. That includes quite some games in the Europa League as well.

At just 21 years of age, he is quite a long-term investment that Villa can look into. His physical stature and height would be a perfect fit for the physical style of play prevalent in the Premier League.

Verdict

It makes sense for Aston Villa to go for Victor Nelsson especially if they wrap up the deal for the £9m amount mentioned in the report. Any decent young defender burns a hole in the pocket these days. Hence, getting Nelsson at that price is surely a huge bargain.

He has over 100 games in the Danish top-flight. Yes, the Premier League is a whole different ball game but with time, he should be able to adjust to the rigours and demands. He is definitely a defender with lots of potential and Villa should look to wrap up a deal for him as soon as they can.
