Why Aston Villa should sign Brentford star Ivan Toney in January
According to Birmingham Live, Brentford star Ivan Toney is one of the strikers Aston Villa could look to sign in the January transfer window. Toney has been in great form this season and Dean Smith could return for him. Villa have previously done business with Brentford, bringing in the likes of Ezri Konsa and Ollie Watkins.
Profile
Ivan Toney shot to prominence at Northampton Town in League Two before earning a move to Newcastle United but he made only a couple of Premier League appearances for the Magpies.
The Northampton-born striker spent time on loan at Barnsley, Shrewsbury Town, Scunthorpe United, and Wigan Athletic, all in League One, before joining Peterborough United on a permanent basis back in the summer of 2018.
The 24-year-old has been quite unstoppable since then, plundering an astonishing 49 goals in 94 appearances for the London Road outfit. That includes 26 goals in 39 games last term. He has kept up his goalscoring form this season after moving to Brentford. In 22 EFL Championship appearances, he has scored 16 goals and assisted 4 more.
Toney can add depth to Villa and competition for Watkins
Dean Smith’s side have enjoyed a good start to the season, having won 8 of their 15 games so far. They look in much better shape than last season and that is very much due to the recruitment done in the summer. The new arrivals of Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley have contributed to the club’s success so far.
The problem, though, is that there is no quality cover or competition for Ollie Watkins. Keinan Davis hasn’t done much to make his case while Wesley is likely to return soon. With the festive period going on, fixtures are going to come thick and fast. Watkins playing all of their games this season does not bode well.
Enter Ivan Toney. The Brentford man has been in sensational form over the last few seasons, performing well in the lower tiers of English football. However, he has shown that he is capable of making the step up with his goals in the Championship. Yes, the Premier League is a whole different ball game but there is a good chance that Toney could flourish.

Villa need to get Toney in as soon as they can because a gruelling second half of the season awaits. They need someone who can ease the goalscoring burden off Watkins and Grealish.
After all, they have featured in pretty much every game this season. Toney can be a fine addition to their forward line and even provide competition for Watkins.
