As per French outlet L’Equipe (h/t Birmingham Live), Wolves have made an attempt to sign Reims defender Axel Disasi in the summer.
Having risen through the ranks of Paris FC’s youth system, Disasi, 22, joined Reims’ B squad in the summer of 2016. A year later, he was promoted to the club’s senior set-up. Though he struggled to get regular game time, he made a major breakthrough in the 2016/17 season.
However, this season, he has been a regular member under David Guion and has established himself as a key component in the French outfit’s backline. His impressive performances have also garnered attention from Arsenal, as per the report. Thus, Wolves should make a move for the Frenchman at the earliest.
With the new season approaching soon, Nuno Espirito Santo needs to bring in reinforcements if they are to keep performing well in the future. They need to make sure that there is depth in every area.
In 29 games, Nuno’s men have conceded just 34 goals, which is a decent record for them but they are capable of doing better. Conor Cody, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly are the main central defenders. And Leander Dendoncker has also been used at the back on several occasions.
However, Ryan Bennet, who returned from a loan spell, is already 30 and has just one more year left on his contract at the Molineux. And Saiss’ contract also is due to expire next summer. Thus, they need to bring in youngsters with a view on the future and stock up their defensive unit.
In that regard, signing Disasi would be a boost to Nuno’s squad. The youngster missed just one game before the league got suspended and that shows his importance in the team. He has been brilliant this season and has been a part of the squad that has conceded just 21 goals in Ligue 1 this term and boasts of the best defensive record.
The French U20 international has helped his side manage 12 clean sheets in 28 games. And he has been one of the main reasons for Reims’ 5th place finish this season. He would definitely add depth to the Wolves squad, whilst also bringing in healthy competition. And with the experience, he could lead their backline in the future.
Though Wolves are well-stocked at the back, they need to think of the future. And Disasi could be a valuable addition if he is able to replicate the same form. He has the ability to succeed and the Midlanders could do well with another defender in their ranks. Thus, they should sign the young Frenchman to Molineux this summer.
