Why Bournemouth should keep hold of Nathan Ake amidst Napoli interest
As per SportWitness (h/t Football.london), Serie A side Napoli are interested in signing defender Nathan Ake as a replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly. Ake, 25, joined Chelsea’s U18 side from Feyenoord in 2011 and was sent on different loan spells to Reading, Watford and Bournemouth before he signed for the Cherries on a permanent basis in the summer of 2017.
He has been one of the best defenders in the league and for Bournemouth despite the club facing a relegation battle. He has been impressive over the past few years.
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s side have fallen to 18th position in the league standings after failing to win any of their last four league games. They have been inconsistent in both defensive and offensive situations throughout the campaign.
The Cherries boss should look to bring reinforcements to their attacking unit as the forwards have scored only 19 league goals, which is not upto the standards of the Premier League. On the other hand, the defensive unit has also let in 47 goals so far. They have only two established centre-backs in Ake and Steve Cook, both of whom have featured regularly for the side without a proper backup.
Chris Mepham and Jack Simpson, who are 22 and 23 years old respectively, aren’t experienced and cannot be depended upon to feature for a whole campaign. Therefore, keeping hold of the Dutchman would be the best option for the South Coast club.
The 25-year-old featured in 23 games for the club as he picked up a hamstring injury midway through the season. In his absence, the Cherries had conceded 9 goals in 5 games but have done better since his return.
The Netherlands international has been a key figure in the team and had helped them to a higher place finish in earlier seasons. And if the club sell him, they would find it difficult to replace him with an experienced Premier League centre-back.
Predominantly a central defender, Ake is capable of featuring as a left-back and also as a defensive midfielder. His versatility would come in handy for the manager in the next few seasons. Hence, they must stop any exit of the former Chelsea man.

Verdict
Ake is just 25 and has a lot more to offer. He has the ability to establish himself as one of the best defenders in England’s top-flight when he gains experience. Though he has not been at his best, he could be the key for the Cherries in the future.
Therefore, the South Coast club must avoid any temptations for the Dutchman and keep him at the Vitality Stadium for as long as possible.
