According to Sky Sports, Burnley winger Aaron Lennon could leave the club in the summer once his contract comes to an end.
Lennon, 33, rose through Leeds United’s youth ranks and made a name for himself with Tottenham since moving to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2015. The winger made 364 appearances in 10 years for the Lilywhites, scoring 30 goals and providing 77 assists before moving on loan to Everton initially.
In his first two seasons with the Toffees, he played regularly but later he found it hard to get game time. He was later signed by Burnley in the summer of 2018 on a two-year deal. And the report suggests that he could be on his way to a different challenge at the end of the season.
The Clarets, meanwhile, have made a tremendous comeback after a poor start to the campaign. However, Dyche should now focus on strengthening the squad for next season if they are to challenge for a European spot.
The manager should make sure there is depth in every department ahead of the new campaign. And so, keeping Lennon at the club would be a wise decision.
Dwight McNeil, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Lennon are the only three natural wingers available at the manager’s disposal. While McNeil, who occupies the left side of the attack, has done a decent job so far, there have been some problems at the right.
Gudmundsson has struggled with injuries throughout the campaign, featuring in just 7 league games. The ex-England international has featured in just 16 games so far. And if Lennon leaves, Burnley’s numbers in the wide areas would be reduced. Therefore, they should convince the winger to stay at the club beyond the summer.
Lennon has made 500 career appearances and his experience could come in handy for the Clarets. His stay would also help the manager maintain depth in the squad and that could be a boost for the club. Though he has not been at his best this season, he could be used in small roles when needed.
At 33, Lennon may not be the best winger but his experience could definitely be useful for the team. He has immense experience in the Premier League. Thus, Burnley should keep hold of the former Tottenham man by agreeing on a new contract with him.
