Burnley signing this 5-goal Championship star would add some much-needed midfield strength

Why Burnley signing Josh Brownhill would be a sensible move

Burnley have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Bristol City midfielder Josh Brownhill, with the Robins captain having a minimum fee release clause in his contract enabling him to leave for a cut-price fee, according to LancsLive.

The 24-year-old has impressed with his performances for the Robins, bagging five goals and two assists this season. That haul leaves Brownhill third in the club’s goalscoring charts. The Robins’ top scorers are Famara Diédhiou and Andreas Weimann, who have scored 7 and 9 league goals this campaign respectively.

Sitting 9th in the Championship and just a point outside the playoffs, Bristol City are well-placed for a promotion push this season – a position that captain Josh Brownhill has been integral in guiding them to.

A consistent performer, the 24-year-old’s acquisition could ease the burden on Cork and Westwood. With midfield goals an issue for Burnley this season – only Jeff Hendrick has scored more than once in the league this season – Brownhill’s return of 5 in 27 Championship appearances offers another good option for Dyche.

Brownhill has been an integral part of his team’s good form and has started 27 of the Robins’ 28 league matches this campaign. With Danny Drinkwater having left Burnley following an unsuccessful loan spell, Brownhill could fill the void.

Burnley have struggled to get going this season. They are at 13th place in the league table with 30 points, 7 points off the relegation zone. They have been good in their last 2 games having beaten Leicester City and Manchester United.

Jack Cork and Ashley Westwood have failed to contribute with goals on a regular basis and Jeff Hendrick has been their most prolific midfielder with 2 goals. Bringing in someone like Brownhill would strengthen their midfield.

Verdict

Burnley need more central midfielders in order to push for the best possible finish in the Premier League and Brownhill is someone who can help them in that aspect.
