Why Celtic should make a prompt attempt to sign Spanish teenager Rodrigo Riquelme

According to Marca (h/t Daily Record), Celtic are interested in signing Spanish teenager Rodrigo Riquelme, who is also wanted by fierce rivals Rangers.

Riquelme, 19, came through the ranks of Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid’s youth system. He made his debut for Atletico Madrid’s senior team last season in a 3-2 win over SD Eibar. But since then, he has found it difficult to get regular game time in La Liga.

However, he has been in fine form for the club’s B team in the Segunda Division B. He has featured in 21 games this season, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists. He was also impressive in the UEFA Youth League, especially in the game against Rangers where he provided 3 assists. He is one of the hottest young talents in Spain.

Meanwhile, Neil Lennon’s side have been dominant over the years and are on course to lift yet another Premiership title, having a 13-point lead over the Gers. They have been excellent in all domestic competitions since the start of the season.

However, their exit from the Europa League at the hand of Copenhagen is a dent in their hunt for success and the manager should find ways to overcome that next season. They need to strengthen each department so that it could be helpful in the future.

One area where Lennon has limited players is the left-wing position. Mohamed Elyounoussi, Mikey Johnston and Daniel Arzani are the only players available in that position. But Elyounoussi and Arzani are on loan and their future at the club is uncertain. And Johnstone, who came through the Reserves side has been out of action for several months due to injury.

Hence, it would be wise to bring in young, talented and in-form players to provide cover in that position. And Rodrigo Riquelme would be a viable option for the Hoops.

The 19-year-old has proven himself in the reserve leagues in Spain and has the ability to develop into a top player. He has been improving nicely and it would be the right time for him to get first-team action.

A left-winger by trade, Riquelme is also capable of operating on the right and can play as a second striker as well. Given his potential, he could be helpful for Celtic, who have limited options on either flank.

Verdict

Riquelme is 19 and this would be the right time for him to play at a higher level to gain experience and Celtic have their issues on the wings. The Spanish teenager can provide them with the depth in the squad.

Hence, the Hoops must lure Riquelme to Celtic Park once the summer transfer window commences.
