Why Chelsea must swap Cesc Fabregas for Napoli sensation Jorginho
According to a report by Calciomercato, Chelsea are considering offloading Cesc Fabregas to sign Jorginho from Napoli this summer. The report states that a potential swap deal could be on the horizon.
If it does happen, not only will the Blues beat Premier League champions Manchester City to sign one of their long-term targets but they will also acquire one of the most talented players in Europe right now. Jorginho’s value has skyrocketed since Napoli nearly won the Serie A title last season and now, he could be on his way to Chelsea.
While the Italians enjoyed a brilliant campaign, Chelsea were quite underwhelming. Despite winning the title in the 2016/17 season, the Londoners struggled to a great extent last season as they finished outside the Champions League spots.
They lacked quality players in almost every department and with the ongoing transfer window, there have been reports suggesting that their star midfielder, N’Golo Kante, could be on his way to join Paris Saint-Germain.
If Kante makes the move, Chelsea will be left with a poor crop of midfield options. Tiemoue Bakayoko failed to make an impact whereas the likes of Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley are quite injury-prone. And as far as Fabregas is concerned, he failed to put up convincing displays last season.
There were times where his experience proved to be fruitful for the club but he clearly lacks pace and is on the wrong side of 30. Hence, this could be a great time to offload him.
Furthermore, if it helps Chelsea land a player of Jorginho’s calibre, they must definitely go for it. A defensive midfielder by trade, the 26-year-old could solve the Blues’ woes in the middle of the park. He is proficient on both fronts since he can attack and defend with equal gusto.
In fact, Jorginho often acted as the glue that held the attackers and defenders together at Napoli and he could replicate the same form at Stamford Bridge as well.
Over the course of the previous campaign, the Italian scored 3 goals and provided 4 assists. In addition to that, he also averaged 1.9 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game.

Jorginho and Fabregas are quite different when it comes to the roles they essay but Chelsea have been crying out for a player who can provide competition – or slot in – for Kante. And if the former Leicester City midfielder leaves Chelsea, Jorginho will be a great replacement.
