Why Chelsea selling Jorginho would make no sense
According to The Sun, Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is on the verge of getting axed by boss Frank Lampard.
The Blues started the season on a high note with the team consisting mostly of youngsters. They did well until November but since then, they have endured mixed results both in the Premier League and the Champions League.
They were banned from making any signings last summer and even after their ban was halved, the manager opted out from bringing reinforcements in January. However, with the signing of Hakim Ziyech, the Stamford Bridge outfit could expect to see a pivotal change in their attacking unit.
In the midfield, Matteo Kovacic has been brilliant in the last few months. He was the only player who tried to create chances in the game against Bayern Munich, for example. On the other hand, N’Golo Kante has been out of the team for the majority of the season due to injury issues. With limited quality in the middle of the park, selling Jorginho would cost Chelsea.
The 28-year-old is one of the key senior figures in the team and is the only defensive midfielder available at the manager’s disposal. Though he was a regular starter last season, he did not make an impact under Maurizio Sarri but has made an incredible comeback.
Jorginho’s versatility would be key to Chelsea’s form, as he is capable of playing in both the deep-lying role and in an advanced position. In defensive situations, he has registered 2.2 tackles and 2.2 interceptions per game in the league, as per Whoscored. While helping the team in the attack, he has contributed with 7 goals and 2 assists in 37 games across all competitions.
Having played over 300 games in Europe’s top leagues, he has also been capped 22 times for his country.

Verdict
Ross Barkley has been out of form and Ruben Loftus-Cheek has missed the whole season through an injury, thus limiting Lampard’s midfield options. Chelsea need to have a full-strength squad if they are to challenge in various competitions next season. And their key players must be kept at all costs.
Therefore, deciding to sell Jorginho, who still has three years left in contract with the club, would prove to be fatal for the Blues.
