Chelsea signing this 28-year-old world-class Bayern star would be a solid addition for Tuchel

Why Chelsea should make a move for David Alaba next summer

According to Sky Sports, David Alaba is one of the names being considered by Chelsea for a summer transfer. The Blues are also looking at the prospect of bringing in Erling Haaland as they prepare for next summer. Alaba is in the last six months of his contract and that has alerted clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, PSG and Liverpool.

Chelsea need to amp up their defence

Chelsea were the first ‘big club’ this season to let go of their manager. Frank Lampard was let go after a string of poor results and no signs of improvement from players. Thomas Tuchel showed in his first two games that he is not afraid to mix things up and use different players. One of the more noticeable factors was the use of a back three.

The problem for Chelsea and Tuchel is that they lack the necessary players in central defence to use that formation. None of the defenders really can be termed as world-class.

Kurt Zouma and Antonio Rudiger come with their own set of limitations. Thiago Silva is nearing his last days as a player while Andreas Christensen has been hardly used. Adding an established name to that roster would work wonders for the side.

David Alaba can be the signing Chelsea need

While Alaba may be a natural left-back, it is his capability to play in a left-sided centre-back role that would appeal to Chelsea. The 28-year-old was asked to play as centre-back last season by Hansi Flick to accommodate Alphonso Davies.

Alaba excelled in his role as a central defender as Bayern Munich romped to a historic treble last season and look clear favourites for trophies this season as well.

His addition to the backline would add a left-footed defender to the side, something Chelsea lack. The fact that Chelsea can sign him for a free at the end of the season should be another enticing factor.

Alaba comes with winning experience and leadership qualities, something which is in short supply at Chelsea right now. Chelsea would be wise to move ahead of other reported interested clubs and seal the deal for him.
