Why Chelsea should part ways with Pedro in the summer

According to the Express, Italian outfit AS Roma are considering a move for Chelsea forward Pedro after Arsenal rejected their bid for Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Pedro, 32, established himself as one of the best wingers in Europe with Barcelona after winning several titles with the La Liga giants. After making over 300 appearances for the Blaugrana, he was signed by Chelsea in 2015.

He became a regular at Stamford Bridge and was instrumental in the club’s Premier League title-winning campaign in 2017. However, the arrival of Frank Lampard last summer saw the Spaniard fall down the pecking and his contract with the club comes to an end in the summer.

Meanwhile, Lampard has done a decent job in his first season as Blues manager and has led his side to 4th place in the league standings. Though they were inconsistent in between, Chelsea have managed to cling on to the last spot of the Champions League qualification.

The Blues squad mainly consists of youngsters, who have had a decent outing so far. Their attacking unit has scored 51 goals in 28 games and youngster Tammy Abraham has led the line brilliantly.

Apart from him, the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Willian, and Mason Mount have also been supportive in their respective roles and look set to carry the team forward in the future. Thus, the manager should look to sell Pedro in the summer.

They already have Willian and Christian Pulisic on the right flank and both of them have delivered at the right time. The USA international was signed last summer and despite struggling initially, he got used to Lampard’s tactics, only be to be injured in the latter part of the campaign. Willian has made 28 appearances, racking up 5 goals and 5 assists.

The manager can just do well with two wingers on the right and thus, offloading Pedro would be a wise decision by the club.

The £100,000-a-week has made only 9 appearances so far and has contributed with just 1 goal and 1 assist. He is already 32 and has been surplus to the requirements of the London club. And keeping him at Stamford Bridge would just see the Blues wasting their resources on a benched player.

Verdict

Chelsea need young and in-form players to bolster their attack if they are to challenge for various trophies in the next season. And this could be possible only if they sell some of their players, who have been inconsistent.

Therefore, the Blues should look to offload the Spanish international in the summer to Roma, who are interested in securing his services.
