Why Chelsea should plot a move for Bournemouth starlet Aaron Ramsdale

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea have targeted Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale along with several others to strengthen their goalkeeping department.

Ramsdale, 21, came through the ranks of Sheffield United’s youth system before moving to the South Coast in 2017. In the last two seasons, he was sent on loan to Chesterfield FC and AFC Wimbledon before appearing in his first season in the top-flight.

Despite Bournemouth being placed in the relegation zone, the youngster has been in sublime form for the Cherries. He has done well so far in his debut campaign in the Premier League and could be on the move to a big team in the summer as Tottenham are also keen on him, as per the report.

Meanwhile, the Blues have been inconsistent at the back throughout the season and have conceded 39 goals, which is the highest among the top 8 teams in the league table. They have had their issues at the back and that has resulted in their goalkeepers also being out of form.

Spanish shot-stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was brought in as cover for Thibaut Courtois, played a key role for Chelsea last season. But this season, he has been underperforming and has cost the team a lot of points.

Former Manchester City man Willy Caballero has also struggled ever since he moved to London and apart from them, the Blues have no third-choice goalkeeper. With both of them unable to perform according to the standards of the Premier League, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard should prioritize strengthening his options in goal.

In that regard, Aaron Ramsdale would be a good choice for the club as he perfectly fits the bill. He has been outstanding so far and has a lot more to offer in the top-flight.

The 21-year-old put in an impressive display on both occasions against Lampard’s men. He was brilliant in the Cherries’ 1-0 win against Chelsea earlier in the campaign. Hence, the manager should consider making a move for Ramsdale.

The English youth international has made 102 saves in the league, which is the third-highest among the goalkeepers in England’s top-flight. He has contributed with 3.64 saves per match, which is far better than Kepa’s 1.68. Ramsdale has saved successfully at a rate of 69.8% which is also better than the Spaniard’s 56.76%. Going by the stats, it is clear that the youngster has had a good season than his counterpart at Chelsea. The former Sheffield United man has the ability to succeed at a higher level, which is evident from his performances in the campaign.

Verdict

Caballero is already 38 and his contract with the club expires this summer, leaving Chelsea with just one option in goal. And Ramsdale’s inclusion would provide them with depth and he is also capable of giving a healthy competition to the Blues’ No.1.

Therefore, Lampard should make a move for the Chesterton-born talent and lure him to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
