According to sources at ESPN, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven left-back Chris Gloster. While Gloster has only been playing at the youth levels, he is very highly-rated. Interest in Gloster means that he could join fellow American DeAndre Yedlin at Newcastle.
Chris Gloster is a 20-year-old American left-back who plays for PSV Eindhoven. He started his youth career at Montclair United SC in 2007. After spending 4 years in their youth setup, he made the move to New Egypt Bohemians. He also had spells at Jersey Galacticos and NY Redbulls.
In 2018, he moved to Hannover 96 and was drafted to the U-19’s. Within a season, he was moved up to the reserves and went on to play 16 games for them, assisting thrice. While he was promoted to the senior side soon after, PSV signed him before he could play even one game. So far he has featured for the U-21’s and has made a total of 22 appearances. Gloster is currently a part of the USMNT U-23’s with 2 caps so far.
Summer signing Jamal Lewis has, of course, made a positive impression following his move to St. James’ Park from relegated Norwich City. The youngster has started 13 league fixtures so far this season but is yet to register a goal or an assist. Lewis has been touted for a bright future but is yet to evolve into a finished article.
Newcastle should, therefore, look to bring in a quality understudy to compete with Lewis for a place on the left-hand side of the backline. Matt Ritchie (31) and Paul Dummett (29) have both struggled with injuries, and haven’t really done an awful lot over the past 12 months. Hence, the door remains open for someone like Gloster to slot in.
While he is yet to play a senior game in his career, there have been signs that Gloster is ready to make the step up. So far, he has impressed in his stints for Hannover and PSV. Obviously, Gloster wouldn’t be expected to make an immediate impact but over time, he can emerge as a long-term option for Newcastle alongside Jamal Lewis.
