Why Claudio Bravo would be a good addition to Leeds United squad
According to En Cancha (h/t The Yorkshire Post), Leeds United are the favourites to sign Claudio Bravo from Manchester City in the summer.
Bravo, 36, came through the ranks of CSD Colo Colo in Chile before joining Real Sociedad in 2006. He displayed some impressive performances with the club and that was enough to convince La Liga giants Barcelona, who signed him in the summer of 2014.
In Barcelona, he became very famous and was the club’s first-choice goalkeeper until he moved to Manchester City in 2016.
In two years with the Catalans, he won several trophies, including the Champions League in the 2014/15 season. But his move to England did not help his cause as he has mostly played second-fiddle to Ederson.
Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are chasing promotion to England’s top-flight and have performed well so far in the Championship.
The manager has led them brilliantly and they remain hopeful of getting promoted to the Premier League. And if they are to perform well in the top-tier, Leeds have to make some important signings, which is much-needed.
Leeds have a bunch of talented outfield players and they have the capacity to do well if they come back to the top-flight. But one position that needs to be strengthened is the goalkeeping department. Former Real Madrid man Kiko Casilla has featured in every possible minute in the league so far for the Whites.
Apart from the Spaniard, no other goalkeeper had been deployed. French youngster Illan Meslier and winter recruit Elia Caprile haven’t yet featured under Bielsa in the league. And Will Huffer hasn’t convinced the manager.
Therefore, signing Claudio Bravo would be a huge boost for the team and it would definitely help them if they are promoted.
The Chilean has immense experience after spending most of his career in the top-flight of Spain and England. And though he has been a backup at Etihad, he has done a decent job whenever called upon.
In the four league games he has played this season, he has kept a clean sheet. He would be the perfect player to compete with Casilla for the No.1 spot. The Whites do not have enough depth and their goalkeeping department would be sorted if they sign Bravo in the summer, given his quality and experience.
Verdict
Bravo needs a chance to revive his career as goalkeepers can play for a long time, unlike the outfield players. And with Leeds, he could get his chances alongside Kiko Casilla and the manager can share the duties between both the shot-stoppers.
Therefore, they must sign Bravo, who is one of the best in the business when given enough opportunities.
