According to Birmingham Live, West Brom have been linked with Rennes midfielder Clement Grenier. The Baggies have plans for more additions in this transfer window as they aim to climb out of the relegation spots.
They have already added the likes of Robert Snodgrass and Andy Lonergan. It has also been said that Rennes are willing to let go of the 30-year-old Grenier.
West Brom sank deeper into relegation trouble following their recent 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Arsenal. The Baggies have managed only a solitary win from 17 games so far, leaving them 19th in the standings, six points adrift of safety.
With just 11 goals scored and 39 conceded, it’s clear that they need significant improvement at both ends of the pitch to climb up the table in the coming months.
While bringing in reinforcements up top and at the back should be high on the club’s agenda, the arrival of Clement Grenier would surely go a long way towards strengthening West Brom’s midfield.
The likes of Romaine Sawyers and Jake Livermore were quite brilliant in the Championship last season but neither has managed to make a significant impact in the top-flight so far.
With Filip Krovinovic also struggling for game time, Choudhury would represent an ideal partner for Chelsea loanee Conor Gallagher in the middle. Gallagher has shown real quality at the Hawthorns and teaming him up with a player like Grenier would surely improve West Brom’s quality in the midfield.
What makes Grenier an attractive option is the fact that he can play in a multitude of positions. He can drop in as a deep-lying playmaker or chip in with goals and assists from the No.10 position. His versatility would boost the squad dynamics at the Hawthorns.
On paper, Clement Grenier looks like a player Villa should pursue. He is creative and can provide more of a threat from the midfield. That would ease the burden on existing players who are struggling for goals. A signing of Grenier’s calibre would be a statement of intent and a real coup for the side.
