According to Birmingham Live, Crystal Palace striker Connor Wickham is the subject of interest for Birmingham City. The latter want to add new faces to their attack as they have found the net on very few occasions this season. Wickham, who has been out with injury this season, is slowly nearing full fitness.
When you consider Wilfried Zaha is playing as a striker, there are 4 players in the side who can be leading the line. Jordan Ayew is very likely the first choice with Christian Benteke and Michy Batshuayi as the backups. Batshuayi is on loan at the club from Chelsea though.
All three have shared the duties through this season and while they have relied on Zaha for most of the goals, they have chipped in with a few goals here and there. So it is clear that the forward department is a bit sorted in some sense of the word even without Connor Wickham’s participation.
Wickham, 27, made 72 appearances for Ipswich Town in two years before moving to Sunderland in the summer of 2011. He then enjoyed loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United. He scored 15 goals each for Sunderland and Leeds before moving to Selhurst Park in 2015.
In his debut season with the Eagles, Wickham scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists but the next three years did not go according to plan. Injury problems over the last two years affected his form and game time. He even spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
Wickham could do with a fresh start and with Birmingham City offering him a chance, Palace would be wise to cash in. Palace have enough forwards in the side who can play in his position. Letting him leave wouldn’t hurt the side much in that sense. They can look to reinvest that cash back into the squad.
