Why Tottenham Hotspur must do everything to hold on to Christian Eriksen

Mauricio Pochettino has stated that he is happy with the current crop of players at Tottenham Hotspur and didn’t feel the need to bring in new additions (h/t ESPN). The Argentine manager failed to make a single addition in the summer transfer window, making Spurs the first team to do so since the inception of the window.

Spurs are also the only team across all of Europe’s top five leagues to not make a single transfer this summer. The squad does consist of a number of world-class stars but Spurs might have to pay for their lack of transfer activity as the season progresses.

And it might start with the potential departure of Christian Eriksen. According to Daily Star, both PSG and Real Madrid are interested in signing the Danish midfielder. Tottenham want at least £100 million for the player, provided he decides to move (h/t Daily Star).

The report further claims that Eriksen’s new contract talks have stalled so far and there’s no certainty as to whether the player wants to carry on with the Lilywhites. But it would be a massive blunder on Spurs’ part to let their best midfielder leave.

It’s only the English window that has shut, meaning other European clubs have an advantage at this point. Considering Spurs haven’t bolstered their squad over the summer, losing Eriksen would drastically affect their chemistry and morale on the field. Regardless of the fee, it would be a suicidal move from Spurs’ part.

Christian Eriksen is the man who runs the show for Tottenham Hotspur in the middle of the park. It might be Harry Kane who racks up the goals, but without Eriksen’s supply, the England captain’s tally would be halved. Since joining from Ajax in 2013, no midfielder has recorded more assists in the league than Eriksen. The Dane has provided a total of 48 assists in 171 Premier League appearances for the club so far.

A countless number of times when Spurs looked blank last season, the Dane would often drop deep to pick up the ball and make something happen. It’s his trademark role in the squad and Tottenham will break down in his absence.

He’s the heart of the team and the creative presence in the middle of the park. The 26-year-old possesses immense passing abilities, often finding the smallest of gaps to play a man in on goal. He is a classy passer and is capable of picking any lock in the tightest of situations.

The winter transfer window will open in four months’ time but if Eriksen decides to leave before that, it would surely sabotage Tottenham’s campaign. Hence, Mauricio Pochettino must do everything in his power to retain his services. With Eriksen gone, there’s going to be nobody to feed the attack for Tottenham.
