Opinion: Would Danijel Subasic be a good signing for Liverpool?
Paul Robinson, the former England goalkeeper, has suggested that Liverpool should look to sign Danijel Subasic (source – Express). The iconic goalkeeper believes that Subasic would be a good solution to Liverpool’s goalkeeper issues after Alisson’s injury forced the club to turn to Adrian.
Profile
Danijel Subasic is a 35-year-old Croatian goalkeeper who is currently a free agent after getting released by AS Monaco in July this year. He started his professional career at NK Zadar in 2003. After making just 28 appearances for them, he moved to Hajduk Split on loan in 2008.
The deal was made permanent midway through the season. He went on to make more than 100 appearances for them while conceding just 89 goals and keeping 47 clean sheets. In 2012, Monaco signed him as he went on to become a permanent fixture in their line-up.
In total, he has played 292 games for the French club while conceding 295 goals and managing 111 shutouts (source – Transfermarkt). Subasic is also an experienced member of the national side with 44 caps to date.
Will Subasic be a good signing for Liverpool?
Alisson’s importance to the team gets highlighted even more when he is out injured. Adrian is a half-decent keeper at best and his tendency to drop an occasional howler is something that Liverpool cannot afford. They are looking to defend their Premier League crown and challenge for the Champions League as well.
Goalkeepers commit mistakes and that’s a natural thing. However, when you keep repeating the same mistakes, the club needs to take notice. Of the seven times Aston Villa rippled the Liverpool net, at least three or four were savable by any keeper worth their salt.
It is very clear that Liverpool need a better second choice in goal and Subasic can be just that. Even though the transfer window is closed, the club can still dip into the free agent pool to sign Subasic.
Verdict
A keeper of Subasic’s ability and experience would no doubt represent an upgrade on Adrian. Subasic was a rock for Monaco for more than half a decade. He is a solid shot stopper, which is something Liverpool urgently need at this point.
