Why Dayot Upamecano to Tottenham would bring stability to their defence
As per Bleacher Report (h/t Football.london), Tottenham are ready to make a move for RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano in the summer.
Upamecano, 22, came through the ranks of Valenciennes’ youth system and joined RB Salzburg in the summer of 2015. He immediately became a key component in the squad, helping his side lift two Austrian Bundesliga titles and the Austrian Cup.
Upamecano was also part of the French U17 squad which won the European Championship in 2015. He joined RB Leipzig in January 2017, and has since been a regular member in the squad. He has gone from strength to strength during his time in Germany. His performances have also attracted interest from Arsenal, Manchester City and Barcelona, as per the report.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. Their earlier performance saw Mauricio Pochettino get sacked. The Lilywhites have also been dumped out of all cup competitions, whilst finding themselves in the 8th position in the league table.
The arrival of Jose Mourinho saw them get off to a good start but the results didn’t last long. The injuries to Harry Kane, Heung Min-Son and January signing Steven Bergwijn have been one of the reasons for their downfall.
While it is clear that Mourinho should bring in reinforcements to their attacking unit, other areas also need to be strengthened. They should make sure to have depth in every department to challenge for titles and trophies in the next campaign.
Upamecano – A future leader in Tottenham’s defence
Tottenham’s defence has been shaky throughout the campaign. They have already conceded 40 goals so far with the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez not at their best.
Vertonghen has fallen out of favour under Mourinho, whereas, his Belgian defence partner has shown inconsistency at the back. Sanchez has also failed to live up to the expectations and youngster Juan Foyth has lost his way completely.
In that regard, signing Upamecano would be a shrewd piece of business for the club. Despite his knee injury earlier in the campaign, the Frenchman has come back stronger and has helped his side to the 3rd position in the league table.
He has also helped them keep 7 clean sheets so far, conceding just 26 goals and boast of the joint-best defensive record in the Bundesliga.
Upamecano has been in scintillating form in the past couple of years. He would be a massive signing for Tottenham and help add more stability and strength at the heart of the defence. He would be the ideal long-term replacement for Vertonghen, whose contract expires next month.

Verdict
Tottenham are in dire need of a central defender and Upamecano, given his recent successful form, would be good signing. Moreover, he is just 22 and would also represent a long-term investment for the club. Thus, the Lilywhites should make a move for the Frenchman and lure him to North London in the summer.
