The entire audience has their heartbeat slowed down the moment they saw Ed Sheeran cry. Which is why, during an emotional performance of songs from his latest album called Subtract (‘-‘), Ed Sheeran brought both himself and his audience to tears.
The 32-year-old Shape of You singer started crying as he launched his brand-new song, “Eyes Closed,” while playing for Apple Music Live.
Before starting the next song Sheeran revealed that it was inspired by his friend. He said, “This song was inspired by Jamal,” during a moving segment in which he finally spoke openly about the passing of his best friend Jamal Edwards last year.
In the same month that Edwards passed away from a cardiac arrest at the age of 31, and his wife Cherry Seaborn was told she had a tumor while six months pregnant with their second child, February 2022 was truly a terrible time for Ed. He had to deal with a lot of difficult situations.
Why did Ed-Sheeran Cry? How did he open up?
The singer opened up about what it was like to make an album against a tragic background and said, “When I write music, it belongs to me, and when I release it, it belongs to you guys.”
“The first time I performed this song, I cried,” he said as he was overcome with emotion. “I cried when I sang it, I cried when I presented it, I cried when I finished it, and I’m going to cry right now.”
The Perfect hitmaker’s obvious grief over introducing a song composed about his friend’s passing caused audience members to shed tears as well. It’s been heartbreaking reading everyone’s stories, but it’s something we all go through, Ed remarked as he reclaimed the microphone.
Then he continued, “That’s the thing I realized when all these things happened last year, it’s just being an adult, s*** just happens,” making a lighthearted joke to the cameras. “Apple when you’re editing this, just make it smooth,” he said. Everyone experiences it.
The third track on his new album, Eyes Closed, was then started by the singer.
