According to Marca (h/t MEN), Liverpool have joined the race to sign Sevilla star Diego Carlos ahead of the new campaign.
The report suggests that the La Liga side are will to sell the Brazilian, whose release clause is at €75m. However, the Reds would have to face competition to secure his services as Manchester United and Manchester City are also interested in signing Carlos.
Born in Brazil, Carlos started his journey with America Futebol Clube and Desportivo Brasil before rising through the ranks at Sao Paulo. He then played in Portugal for Estoril and FC Porto’s B side before moving to Nantes in the summer of 2016.
He became an integral member of Nantes’ squad and went on to make 108 appearances in three seasons with the club, helping them reach the semifinals of Coupe de France in his final campaign before moving to Sevilla last summer.
The 27-year old immediately became a regular at the back under Julen Lopetegui and helped his side qualify for the Champions League, whilst also playing a key role in Sevilla’s Europa League triumph.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have been brilliant in the last two seasons. They claimed their first-ever Premier League title in the season gone by. However, the Reds’ backline showed inconsistency towards the end of the 2019/20 campaign..
Dejan Lovren left Anfield in July to join Zenit St. Petersburg. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been regular starters but Joel Matip hasn’t been of much support since his return from injury. Thus, they should sign a central defender this summer to ensure depth within the ranks.
In that regard, Carlos would be a solid addition to Liverpool’s backline. The Brazilian is in the form of his life after his heroics in the Europa League finals saw the Spanish side lift the trophy. He featured in 45 games across all competitions last seasons playing a vital role in Sevilla’s domestic and European success.
His inclusion would definitely add depth to the Reds’ squad, whilst also bringing in healthy competition. He can be a crucial player for Liverpool next season if he is able to continue with the fine form.
Lovren’s exit has reduced the Reds’ number at the back and it is clear that they are in need of centre-backs. And Carlos, who enjoyed a brilliant 2019/20 campaign, would provide them with some much-needed depth and quality at the back. Thus, signing the Brazilian would be a smart move for Liverpool.
