UFC Fight Island sees the return of The Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung, as he finally gets his shot against Brian Ortega.

The pair have had spats in the past with Ortega and the fight was to take place on 21 December, 2019. However, Ortega pulled out of the clash with an injury but Fight Island will finally hold this clash.

Most UFC stars have nicknames but Jung’s Korean Zombie is possibly one of the best names in the MMA world.

Jung looks nothing like a zombie but there is a reason why he was given this name.

Why is Jung called the Korean Zombie?

This all goes back to his fighting style as he was making a name for himself outside of South Korean.

Jung would take crazy damage while going forward and not backing down, similar to a zombie not feeling pain when getting hit.

This name has stuck with the South Korean and the UFC also uses the Zombie nickname to refer to the star.

It isn’t that Jung is unhappy with this and spoke about the name a while back and how it has stuck with him:

“I think it’s the best (nickname) in MMA”, that was his statement a while back (h/t USA Today).

He even claimed he was happy to have this all guns blazing fighting style, but his chance to win UFC gold against Jose Aldo didn’t go his way in 2013.

The Zombie also faced a couple of years away due to mandatory military training. However, he made his UFC return in 2017 and a win over Ortega could see him get another crack at Featherweight gold.

Korean Zombie MMA record

The South Korean started his MMA career in some style by winning his first nine fights. Most of these were wins in the South Korean circuit and his first loss was in World Victory in 2009 against Masanori Kanehara.

Jung then moved to WEC where he lost his first two fights. However, he joined the UFC in 2011 and won his debut by beating Leonard Garcia.

The Zombie also got a huge win over Dustin Poirier in 2012 before losing the title bout against Aldo.

Jung made his return from service by defeating Dennis Bermudez before losing to Yair Rodriguez.

However, he won his next two UFC fights. The Zombie lost his latest outing against Brian Ortega and now holds an MMA record of 16 wins and six losses.
