According to Daily Mail, Ligue 1 side Nice are pondering making an offer for Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
The 30-year-old Schneiderlin moved to Goodison Park in January 2017 following a £24million deal from Premier League rivals Manchester United. Despite moving to Everton more than three years ago, the Frenchman has failed to impress, making 88 appearances for them across all competitions.
Schneiderlin, who has been in and out of the side this season also, has featured just 18 times for them this season and is currently out of the side due to an injury.
Schneiderlin, who will enter the final 12 months of his contract soon, has been the target of French side Nice, who are willing to offer around £7million for his services. However, the report also claims that Nice are weighing up their options and are yet to firm up their interest in the out-of-favour Everton player.
Meanwhile, the Carlo Ancelotti-led side have endured a difficult campaign in the league so far and are currently 12th in the table. Except for strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, rest of the side’s players have failed to deliver and it has been clearly evident in the side’s displays this season.
They have managed just 10 wins out of 29 league games. They have struggled defensively throughout this term, conceding as many as 46 goals. A weak back-four and lack of a consistent defensive-minded midfielder have been the major reasons for Everton’s slip.
Apart from Schneiderlin, Everton also have newcomer Jean-Philippe Gbamin in the side. The 24-year-old defensive midfielder arrived from Bundesliga outfit Mainz last summer. However, he has spent most of his time on the sidelines due to injury, making just two league appearances this time.
The Toffees also have Muhammed Besic in the same role but he just returned last month following a season-long loan spell with Sheffield United. Despite having as many as three defensive midfielders in the side, Everton have struggled this season, indicating that the side are clearly in need of some new faces in the middle.
That said, veteran Schneiderlin seems surplus to the club’s requirements at the moment. He has managed just one goal and two assists during his time at Goodison Park until now. Hence, it would be wise of the club to sell their underperforming star.
Apart from Schneiderlin, Gbamin, and Besic, Everton have six other midfielders in their ranks, that losing the veteran Frenchman would not hurt them next season. Having failed continuously, it seems foolish of Everton to hold onto Schneiderlin any long. They should rather sell him and use that money to strengthen areas that need real improvement.
