As per Tuttomercatoweb (h/t Liverpool Echo), Everton are interested in signing Fiorentina midfielder Gaetano Castrovilli in the summer.
Castrovilli, 23, came through the ranks of SSC Bari’s youth system before joining La Viola’s U19 squad on loan in 2017. In July that year, Fiorentina signed him permanently. He was impressive with the club’s youth system before going out on loan to Cremonese in order to get first-team action.
Since his return last summer, the Italian has been a regular member under Giuseppe Iachini. He has been consistent throughout the campaign and his impressive performances have caught the attention of Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund, as per the report. Thus, Everton should beat off competition for the young midfielder in the summer.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have been inconsistent throughout the season despite getting off to a good start under the Italian midway through the campaign. Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are the only players who have been at their best, trying to help the team move forward.
The defence has been shaky on several occasions and the midfield has lost its charm. As a unit, they have been vulnerable and thus, the manager should bring in reinforcements for the new campaign. They need to be well equipped in every department if they are to progress further.
Gylfi Sigurdsson, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes are the only three attack-minded midfielders available at the manager’s disposal. While Gomes had been out of action for several months, Davies has not been anywhere near his best. Iceland international Sigurdsson has also failed to make an impact on the squad. Thus, a creative midfielder is a must in the summer.
In 24 league games this season, Castrovilli has racked up 3 goals and 2 assists. He is a goalscoring midfielder, something which Everton have been deprived of this term. However, Everton would be better off looking for someone better. The mere numbers of Castrovilli suggest he wouldn’t add too much productivity to the Toffees midfield.
Everton have lacked creativity this season and it is clear that they are in need of midfielders who can be productive. But Castrovilli looks like he might not be that player. Hence, Ancelotti must look elsewhere to ease his midfield problems.
